Package Design

APT engineers assess the information from the fragility tests and develop the most cost-effective package. Each package design protects a product throughout all points of distribution to ensure that your product will be delivered to your customer undamaged, at the lowest cost, and with a minimum effect on the environment.

The development of an optimized package system involves a step-by-step engineering approach which focuses on product characteristics, packaging material characteristics, and the distribution environment. The quality and cost implications make the package design function far too important to delegate it to unskilled personnel or package suppliers. The waste of resources which often results from improper packaging is enormous. Whether it shows up as a damaged product or an overly expensive package system, it is still waste; waste which can be avoided.

Process For Protective Package Design And Testing

  • Define the distribution environment in terms of harmful inputs (shock and vibration).
  • Define product fragility or sensitivity in terms of these same inputs (shock and vibration).
  • Examine weak areas of the product for possible improvement or ruggedization.
  • Define cushion material characteristics in terms of shock and vibration attenuation.
  • Design a protective package system using the information gained from the first three steps.
  • Test the package system using the inputs likely to occur in the distribution environment.
