| Looking for ways to generate a little cash, Storage Technology Corp. has decided to open its high-tech test lab to the public. The $4.8 million facility in Longmont, until now, has been used to test packaging that StorageTek uses to ship its tape drives and to test the drives. But the engineers who run the lab, Steve Kajewski and Roger Morgan, decided some its operating costs could be offset if they opened it up to other companies. This week the doors swing wide and for about $150 an hour you can take your gizmo in and have it slammed and shaken to your hearts content. StorageTek plans to hire three new engineers to staff the public side of the business. The lab employs 15 engineers now. "It’s probably one of the nicest packaging labs in the world," said John Kesig, who runs a similar though smaller lab in Broomfield. Kesig, a former StorageTek employee, opened his lab, Packaging Development Services, in 1988. Kesig has been able to use StorageTek’s lab in the past and said there’s plenty of demand for the services it will offer. "Though I’d rather not have the competition, they have equipment that no one else has," Kesig said. StorageTek’s Kajewski estimates that the lab will generate $200,000 worth of business this year. "For years people have been calling and asking to use our lab. If there is a demand out there, we might as well try to capitalize on it," Kajewski said.
