In 1982 StorageTek established a product packaging design and testing facility at its Louisville, Colorado campus. The mission: to validate the ruggedness of StorageTek products and design packaging that would reduce or eliminate product damage during transportation. In 1992 the operation was upgraded and moved to Longmont, 15 miles north of Louisville.

In August 1995 StorageTek opened the doors of this new lab to outside business. Officially named Advanced Product Testing, the facility offers the same services and expertise to outside businesses, as is provided internally. In 2006 StorageTek was aquired by Sun Microsystems. Under Sun Microsystems, APT is one of the largest, state-of-the-art, RFID, packaging design and product testing laboratories in the nation!
